A Shepherd for the Lord's Flock

Quote from Letter 7,39 to Marinianus, bishop of Ravenna. July 597

(T)he statues of the sacred canons do not permit a church to remain without a bishop form more than three months, in case, with the loss of the shepherd, the ancient enemy (Heaven forbid!) may lie in wait and tear apart the Lord's flock.
And so, your Fraternity should consent to their [the fathfull of the church of Imola] entreaty, and consecrate a bishop in plave of the lapsed one.
For, while you should have advised and encouraged them to do this, even before they had asked you, you ought not to put them off with any excuse as thhey ask you. For a church of God should not remain deprived of its own bishop for a long time.
