Absolution

Quote from Letter 7,18 to Martin, deacon and abbot. April 597

We found nothing [in our investigation of the allegations] that could harm you, but in case any suspicion should remain over these accusations, for complete satisfaction, even if you have been cleared of these charges, we have carried out strict sacraments before the most holy body of Peter, prince of the apostles.
For that reason, once we were satisfied, as was proper, we provided for your Beloved to be absolved in every way, and we have decided unreservedly that you should go back to your church in that same position and rank which you had before, and you should bear no objections from anyone, nor any disturbance over these matters that had been brought before us.
But we warn you that you ought to show yourself to be so cautious and concerned about all other matters, that you do justice to your office in your habits and actions, and that there should be no chance at all of any adverse report being made against you.
